About this Case Study

Design thinking provides a useful framework for problem solving irrespective of the domain or industry you are working in. In this session we’ll be discussing how we used techniques, learned and practiced doing user centred design for products, to understand and evaluate the onboarding experience of new employees at our company.

We’ll be telling the story of:

  • being sponsored by HR to research the onboarding experience
  • dipping our toes into service design for the first time
  • challenging the notion of what design means to the organisation
  • helping process-oriented teams appreciate the value of a more people-centred approach
  • building on the qualities of empathy, experimentation and collaboration to deliver recommendations for change

For the purposes of this session, the focus will be on the activities we chose and how we went about using them for the project. We’ll share with you how holding a mirror up to internal processes and providing a window into the employee experience were used as a stimulus for continuous improvement. Join us to learn how we went about this and discuss how skills honed designing for one domain can be applied to problem solving in another.
